Kathmandu Valley
History
Kathmandu was founded in 723 AD by the Licchavi
king Gunakamdeva at the confluence of the holy
Bagmati and Vishnumati Rivers.The hub of the
city is the oldest building The kasthamandap
which stood at the crossroads of two important
trade route.
The name Kathmandu is itself derived from the
temple but did not enter customary usage until
after Pritivhi Narayan Shah 's conquest in
1768,Prviously it was the valley and surrounding
areas were known as Nepala or Nepal Mandala.
Later following Jayasthi Malla's 14th century
unification of the three medieval Newar towns
Kathmandu, Pathan and Bhaktapur which occupy the
valley Kathmandu became an important
administrative center. Then following the 17th
century Gorkha unification of the kingdom by
King Pritivhi Narayan Shah ,it naturally became
the capital of the newly formed country.
